Client
The North Face is an outdoor brand specialising in high-performance technical clothing and equipment that combines a spirit of exploration with innovation, from the mountains to urban culture.

Assignment
To develop the concept and visual identity for The North Face Re-cycle, an event in Milan dedicated to the reuse of the brand’s archive materials, by designing a visual system applied across digital touchpoints, physical installations and takeovers of local venues, to communicate the initiative’s values of sustainability and heritage.

Process & Solution
The system is derived from an element of The North Face logo, reused as a building block. Rotated and repeated, it generates the circular structure of recycling, transforming the ‘re-cycle’ into a design method. The typography, inspired by receipts, introduces the concept of circulation and continuity, translating the product’s life cycle into a visual language. The identity is modular and scalable, applied to digital media, installations and billboards, extending the concept to the registration mechanism via Vinted.

Typographic choice for the logo
The font used on receipts is incorporated into the logo as a visual reference to the origin of the cycle, as it is the first tangible evidence of a product’s existence.

Colour and typography palette
The colour palette draws inspiration from two visual references. The green, given a more pop and industrial feel, is derived from the universal symbol of recycling. Meanwhile, the off-white evokes yellowed paper and the wear and tear of objects.
The typography is based on three typefaces, each with a distinct role. Merchant Copy is used for the logo, evoking the aesthetic of receipts. Roboto Mono is used for headings, key information and buttons. Diatype is used for body text and informational content.

How to register for the workshop
To ensure consistency between the content and the method of access, I proposed using Vinted as the platform for registering for the workshop. The event, with limited places, would have taken the form of, for example, 40 digital ‘items’ published online. Purchasing one of these would have guaranteed entry.
The project stems from the idea of taking the principle of recycling beyond the visual realm, transforming it into a real-world distribution mechanism.
This is a conceptual proposal, likely complex to implement due to bureaucratic and regulatory constraints, but developed to test the robustness of the system and its actual capacity to extend beyond the visual sphere.
